Olympiastadion
Olympiastadion or Olympic stadium was built for summer Olympics of 1916 at Berlin .
This stadium was considerably damaged during the Second World War but later it was reconstructed and renovated. The stadium is surrounded by the huge Olympischer Platz was built for the Summer Olympics of 1936.In the post World War phase, the stadium was occupied by the United Kingdom military and was used as operational headquarters.Olympiastadion can host about 110,000 spectators. Previously there were also different stands for Adolf Hitler and his followers. At present it is a spectacular sports venue with all modern facilities for hosting different games and athletics.
Few major places near the Olympiastadion are as follows:
- Maifeld: It is an 112,000 square meter lawn for different gymnastics and it is famous as May Day was celebrated here during the Nazi regime
- Glockenturm, the Bell Tower : It is near to the stadium and the whole city of Berlin was visible from this tower.
- The Langemarck-Halle: It was made up of huge halls and several military parades were carried in here during the Second World War.
- Waldbühne, the Forest Theatre: This theatre was made in the glacial sides of the river and it has close proximity with Olympiastadion.
The renovation of the stadium made it alluring to the sports lovers; the stadium was re-opened after renovation in the year 2004.Friendly matches were arranged and people from different parts of Europe poured in to enjoy the opening ceremony. Now the stadium has a seating capacity of 76,000 people. There are ample of floodlights and it is now one of a major sports stadium of the world.
