Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie was name given by the Western Allies, it was actually a crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin and it was a strategic point during the cold war period. There were also other checkpoints but this played a significant role as it was selected as the single crossing pint by the foreigners. It was located nearer to the Wall Street. The Soviets used to call the place with a different name but the German's called it Charlie's checkpoint.
Charlie's checkpoint slowly became a symbol of cold war and it represented the separation of East and West Berlin . Many of the East Germans considered it as the gateway of their freedom. It became a major place of tourist attraction and visitors from different corners of the globe used to visit the place every year. It was an outstanding viewing point to and it was indeed a great experience to see the East Berlin , while eating or drinking in the cafeteria of the Charlie's Point.
Today, Charlie's checkpoint is history and office buildings have been made at the place of Charlie's checkpoint. Rainer Hildebrandt founded a Museum at the place and visitors com to see it. The museum remains open between 9 A.M to 10 P.M. It is worth mentioning that a 140 meter long section of the Berlin Wall was erected by the Museum at Checkpoint Charlie during October 2004 to maintain the memories of Charlie's checkpoint and the wall.Moreover, 1065 crosses were provided for the victims of East German border system.
It can be a great experience to visit the place of Charlie's checkpoint and the place still has tourist attraction. There are different restaurants and cafeterias nearby.
